Jam of the Day 07/19/2023
The Grateful Dead's soundcheck jam at Watkins Glen is legendary among fans. It took place on July 27, 1973, in preparation for the iconic Summer Jam at Watkins Glen music festival, which would take place the next day. The festival featured the Grateful Dead, The Band, and the Allman Brothers Band, drawing a massive crowd of approximately 600,000 people.
This improvisational session allowed the band to warm up and test their equipment before the festival and ended up lasting several hours and showcased the band's incredible musical chemistry exploring various musical themes highlighting the intricate guitar interplay between Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir, Phil Lesh's melodic bass lines, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart's rhythmic drumming, and the unique keyboard sounds of Keith Godchaux.
Enjoy,
Kev
